OVERVIEW

The site offers a unique aspect and an incredible opportunity for engagement with the Sunshine Coast landmark, Mt Coolum

The building form and materiality take direct reference from this ancient volcanic dome. Outer faces of the building reflect a monolithic mass or rock formation, expressed with brick and singular materials/ planes. Secondary and protected facades are articulated with hardwood timber and expressed as carved forms playing on the adjacent mountain geology and the layered tones of the south eastern escarpment. The two pronounced external materials (brick and timber) are layered to to reference these fractures in a playful and contextually appropriate manner. Landscaping is used to break down the mass and soften the building form from both a larger street perspective but also on a smaller scale between units. Shaded alcoves and pockets of landscaping again reference the micro climatic of Mt Coolum.

The building and units are designed to maximise visual connection with the mountain whilst maintaining comfortable amenity, privacy and climatic responsiveness. Common layouts and design methodologies provide for cost and build efficiencies, allowing the opportunity to include quality design details, individual pools (for climatic cooling purposes also) and quality/ durable materials.
