OVERVIEW

The proposal involves the conversion of a local Masonic Lodge into rooming accommodation. Comprising seven new sole-occupancy units, the design seeks to retain key structural elements and celebrate the building’s heritage character through thoughtful additions, material selection, and contemporary architectural detailing.

The footprint of the existing lodge accommodates the layout of the new units, while a new multi-functional verandah is sensitively designed around the building envelope to enhance amenity by providing access, shelter, and private open space. Secondary elements such as timber-detailed seating, privacy screening to the south-west, and vertical landscaping create a dialogue between old and new, reinforcing a sense of place and comfort.

Externally, the material palette extends upon the existing heritage features, incorporating weatherboards, fibre cement with over battens, and painted timber finishes. Building and cladding datums are expressed through variations in colour and texture—acknowledging the original fabric while introducing a refined, modern interpretation.

A standalone skillion-roof carport at the rear accommodates solar and water-harvesting infrastructure while providing visual screening (through timber screening and landscaping) and an overall buffer to the adjoining southern lot.
